Course Description & Course Outline
Art in the middle grades emphasizes the transition from elementary school to high school level approaches to art. This includes learning to develop and communicate personal ideas in art, observational drawing, color and painting, self-evaluation and habits of mind necessary for success in art production and other areas of life. The course incorporates art history, aesthetics, and art criticism into studio-based units.
Because at the current time, students cannot reliably take 6th, 7th and 8th grade art in sequence, the overall course goals for 6-8th grade are the same. However, approaches to drawing, painting, three-dimensional art and art history content vary at each grade level. Course units and learning activities are designed to introduce or to expand and deepen overall learning goals; this approach accommodates students who are taking middle school art for the first time or have had the good fortune to take 6-8th grade art in sequence.
Grading Scheme
Nine-week classes must have a minimum of sixteen grades. Each student’s grade will be divided equally between writing assignments, tests, quizzes, and projects. Students are not graded on artistic talent but on each student’s ability to follow instructions and complete assignments.
The Fulton County Academic Grading Scale will be used in class:
A 90 and above
B 80-89
C 70-79
F 69 and below
Homework Expectations
In order to master the objectives in 9 weeks, it is expected that students may need to spend some time on work outside of class.
Provisions for Improving Grades:
Middle School Recovery Process from the Board policy on Grading and Reporting (IHA)
B. Provision for improving grades
1. Opportunities designed to allow students to recover from a low or failing cumulative grade will be allowed when all work required to date has been completed and the student has demonstrated a legitimate effort to meet all course requirements including attendance.
2. Teacher will determine when and how students with extenuating circumstances may improve their grades.
Students in art class have, with the exception of tests, approximately the first 7 weeks of the 9 week course to turn in any assignment for full credit. Students who choose not to do their work in a timely manner may not benefit as fully from the class as those who do their work when it is assigned. Much of learning is sequential. Missed or delayed steps of learning may cause students to perform poorly upon future work. Thurs. Sept 25th , 2008 class time, is the last possible due date for all prior assignments. If a student is absent on Thursday Sept. 25th, 2008 class time, the work is due on the first day the student is back at school.
When the majority of the class finishes a classroom assignment the work will be graded and entered in Parent Connect. The class will then move on with the rest of the art curriculum. If your child has not turned in the project with his/her rubric, the letters INC or I will appear in Parent Connect and an alert message may be sent to you to let you know that your child has not completed/turned in his/her work. After Sept. 25th, 2008 , if the work has still not been turned in, the INC letters will be replaced with zero(s). Connections class may have as few as 16 grades. In Art class passing averages cannot be maintained with zeros earned for class work.
Scheduled Help Sessions
Students, who use their time in class appropriately, are welcome to stay after school for extra help until 4:30p.m. Please have your child make arrangements with me at least 24 hours in advance. If you cannot pick your child up by 4:30, you must choose a different option. A note giving permission and information about 4:30 p.m. transportation arrangements, stating that the child will have transportation arrangements by 4:30, a phone number where the parents can be reached should the child finish their work early, and the parent’s signature, must accompany every student staying after school.
Mrs. Reeves, our principal, states that students who wish to stay after school for any reason must sign the sign-in sheet in the morning, in the cafeteria.
Your child may come in the morning for extra help. The art room is available every morning at 8:00 a.m. or a little earlier, unless I am absent. Students must get their agenda stamped to come to the art room in the morning. Students must get the stamp the day before.
Students may take class work home to finish. Some supplies which are not allowed outside of the art room with students may need to be picked up by the parent. Please make these arrangements between the teacher and student before you come to the school. . Your student will need to be included in the take home process because the teacher may not know which project belongs to your child or exactly which materials your child will need to complete the assignment.
Teacher/Parent Communication
I am available to conference at school from 8:00 a.m. until 8:30 a.m., unless I am on duty. I will return any calls or e-mail within 24 hours of having received the message, during school hours. My e-mail address is schofield@fulton.k12.ga.us
Students receive their graded work promptly .They are responsible for keeping their graded papers in their classroom folder. You as parents are encouraged to look at your student’s agenda everyday. Parents will be notified by the teacher using the phone, agenda or interim report, at the 4 1/2 week mark of the class, if a child is in jeopardy of failing. Please be sure the school office has your current address and phone numbers.
As you are aware, your student’s grades for each class are posted on Parent Connect. Through Parent Connect, you are welcome to keep vigil of your student’s progress all the time.
Please review your child’s agenda daily for any notes from any of your child’s teachers. I will issue detention for any student who does not return a parent/ guardian signature on a progress or conduct note the very next day the student returns to school.
Absence Make-up Work Procedures
Upon returning to school following an absence, it is the student’s responsibility to contact the teachers to request make-up work. Make-up work must be completed by the student within the time specified by the teacher. Students will receive one day to make up work for each day they are excused absent from school. Make-up work submitted late will receive a zero.
Classroom Procedures and Expectations
Students should be prepared to participate fully and appropriately in all activities.
Students need to have a 6B drawing pencil, or an ebony drawing pencil for art class every single day as well as a “pink pearl” style eraser. An eraser cap is helpful also. You may go to the art store and buy the materials, or your student can bring the correct change to school and the art teacher will sell the materials to your student at cost.
· The ebony drawing pencils are .55.
· The pink pearl erasers are .70.
· The eraser caps are .15.
Of course your child may use a # 2 wooden pencil, but they are much harder to use because they have a harder center and take longer to achieve the required results. Mechanical pencils are not permitted.
Students will not be allowed to disrupt class by asking the teacher or other students to supply their pencil. Conduct grades will be lowered for students out of seat or disrupting class for the purpose of borrowing pencils.
Check in your student’s agenda periodically for notes regarding whether your child is coming to class prepared. If your child is tearing out agenda pages or altering his/her agenda, against school rules, you may not get information that you should be receiving.
It is extremely important that the students follow the directions of the teacher at all times. Each student is expected to remain seated and maintain low levels of conversation while participating in the art lab activities.
Discipline Guidelines
In order to maintain an environment conducive to learning, students must follow behavior guidelines. Should a student not follow these rules, teachers will use a combination of some of the following methods: verbal warning, communication to parents via telephone or agenda, detention, time-out, or a conference between parent, teacher and student.
If the student continues misbehaving, the teacher, using an official student conduct referral, will refer the child to the appropriate assistant principal. The Fulton County Discipline Cycle will then begin its official process.
Items we could really use in the art room for your child:
